Shaggy - Lessons For Beginners (1975)

Shaggy was a band formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1973. The band released just one album "Lessons For Beginners," in 1975, the album is very rare and its value for the original vinyl was about $ 300.
illustration of the album cover shows a naked woman lying on a gallows with a sunrise in the background, and next we banda playing surrounded by mountains and UFOs. The album begins with "Destination Nowhere", a killer track are noticeable influences from Deep Purple in both guitars as the Hammonds. "Vegence" is somewhat more accelerated pace of vocal reminds the Queen on their first records. The album continues with "Bitch" that surely is another highlight, the bases of the Hammonds are intense, and the instrumental "Lessons For Beginners." "I Can Feel" is another instrumental track, here only runs the guitar Jan "Fidde" Rognas. Closing the album "Brink Of Nowhere", the longest track on the disc, with its 7:30 minutes, this track has sound more progressive, harmmond provides support while the guitars do a fine job with his long solos.

The only album of the legendary power-trio. Legendary - not in the sense of "great", but in terms of - experimental noise-rock ... The explosions of fireworks at concerts. Adhering to the title of the album, it contains four tracks - different in content, but the same in essence. This is - paranoia on Cream (in "frikovoy" package) on Black Sabbath, led by guitarist Jimi Hendrix (if you can imagine) ... Early Alice Cooper ... The first Guru Guru ... Amateur Led Zeppelin ... Words - English, music - unreal. Early krautrok one word. Breakage broken, reinventing the wheel ...

As far as the current ’scene’ of progressive rock goes, I don’t think anyone would bat an eye at the prospect of a new band harkening back to the ‘classic’ sound of the 1970’s. Taking a look at its 2011 release date alone, I might have been inclined to see this as a group of musicians paying a rough tribute to some of their favourites. Strangely enough, Spettri recorded their debut in 1972, but it has not seen the light of day until 2011, where it was remastered and released by Black Widow records. Although I have heard of some albums going through production hell, it is a shame that Spettri did not get a chance to burst onto a more global scene. Although this debut often feels more like a promising demo than a legitimate full-length, the self-titled “Spettri” gives a glance into the past that the vast majority of proggers will not have been able to hear until now.

I like to think of Spettri as an Italian equivalent to Deep Purple. Although they don’t go for the same heavy metal punch as the Purple, Spettri share the formula, that being one of organ- driven hard rock. Black Sabbath is another staunch comparison, at least as far as their trudging compositions go. Although I cannot say that Spettri would have changed the course of prog rock had they enjoyed a release closer to the time of the actual recording, there is a great deal of promise in their sound. ‘Promise’ and ‘potential’ are words that come to mind when listening to the album; although their fields are fertile, there are a few things holding them back from excellence.

First and foremost, the production will catch a listener’s ear as being quite raw, perhaps too raw even for Spettri’s hard rock leanings. While the demo-calibre studio quality certainly fits Spettri more than an elaborate overproduction, I can’t help but hear the music as if it were a work-in-progress. The musicianship is strong, but it feels as if Spettri had not get smoothed out the rough currents in their performance yet. Ugo Ponticello’s vocals hang beneath the rest of the sound, spouting metaphysical lyrics (in their native Italian). Ponticello’s vocals sound much more influenced by the UK bluesmen than most Italian progressive singers, although his delivery- like the rest of the performance- feels just a pitch under the weather.

The real standout here are the keyboards, and this is what I think Spettri would have become ‘known’ for, had they gone forth with their music. Stefano Melani’s Hammond organ has a rich, organic sound to it, and most of the band’s compositions are wrapped around this, their greatest strength. Fans of hard rock with a progressive edge should find “Spettri” enjoyable, although even the album’s greatest moments feel imperfect by nature. An obscure gem, but one scratched and scarred by a weak studio execution.

The Blues Right Off - Our Blues Bag (1970) RARE

An incredibly rare album, Our blues bag changes hands for princely sums. It was privately pressed in 500 copies and housed in a cloth bag that was silkscreened with the band's and record name, and also contained a lithographic print by venetian artist Vittorio Basaglia.
No counterfeit exists, nor foreign reissues.
This not a review as such, it's info as to this crazy album & how it came about. Having peddled early demos to record companies in Italy and getting a flat "no thanks" at every turn, we decided to record and release on our own what became "Our Bluesbag". The cover is hand-printed (!!) by famous Venetian artist Vittorio Basaglia, inside a jute sac with an album title stencil and the final vinyl album was done in 500 copies... mine was lost years ago in a fire, though. The recording was done by Ermanno Velludo, one of those guys gifted with Golden Ears - he was to us what George Martin was for The Beatles, and a de facto fifth member of The Blues Right Off. We did it all in about 2 days, a lot of it being "first takes". Essentially, it is a live album, done in a painter's studio and not a proper recording studio! It rates 5 stars for our determination of "going against the grain" and for Ermanno's incredible sonic result. All the material is home-grown - no covers here. We sold copies on the street in Venice and at concerts and that "ultra-rare" tag is correct as it wasn't distributed through shops. We later found out that "Our Bluesbag" is now a legendary album and also expensive to get, if you can get one! If you're interested in more about those obscure days in Italy, check the site italianprog.com - under Artists/B there's more Blues Right Off info... In retrospect, it's kinda strange as to Italian "firsts" we accumulated:first "location studio" recording / releasefirst home-grown release / own-distribution in Italy first hand-made / hand-printed coverfirst Blues album in Italy Ermanno still has original tapes but we've resisted so far to re-release anything. So for those who haven't had the possibility to listen to the music here's a short description:it's a bit like John Mayall, vocally, as I haven't got a nasty, deep & growling voice - also, I figured that I wasn't exactly born in some Black US ghetto being Danish and very white in terms of looks. A song like "Born On The Highway" is about being a truckdriver going from coast to coast across the USA, endlessly. Another one is about the "Black Angel" of Berlin, then in the news. It's an attempt at having the Blues - anyone can "have the Blues" - you don't need to be Black, in other words. Claes Cornelius - on behalf of The Blues Right Off

01 One Mint Julie
02 Rushing Wish
03 Black Angel
04 Love's Gonna Show Up Someday
05 Leaving My Hometown

The C.A. Quintet "Trip Thru Hell"

There's not much to compare this album to, even in the weird musical climate of 1968 -- there are echoes of Country Joe The Fish and the Doors, perhaps, in the mysterioso organ and morbid imagery.
Not that Ken Erwin was in the same league as Jim Morrison, or even Country Joe, as a songwriter.
But (with the exception of the brassy good-time cut "Underground Music"), psychedelia was very rarely this dementedly gloomy.
Occasional pealing bells and curdling screams (to say nothing of the Boschlike cover art) add to the foggy underworld menace.
Reissued without authorization in Europe in the 1980s, the 1995 domestic CD is a first-class job: the 12 bonus cuts gather some rare non-LP singles, alternate takes, and previously unreleased songs, and the liner notes feature extensive interviews with Ken Erwin and engineer Steve Longman.

Tracks :

1.Trip Thru Hell (Part 1)
2.Colorado Mourning
3.Cold Spider
4.Underground Music
5.Sleepy Hollow Lane
6.Smooth as Silk
7.Trip Thru Hell (Part 2)
8.Dr. Of Philosophy
9.Blow to My Soul
10.Ain't No Doubt About It - (previously unreleased)

Man Made - Man Made (Can 1971, psych)

Man Made - Man Made (Can 1971, psych)
Media: LP Label: GOOD NOISE
Release Number: GN5001
Tracks:
A1. Man Made 19:54
B1. Carnival 5:08
B2. Reflections 3:00
B3. Evolution 3:10
B4. Keep on Moving 2:15
B5. Country Company 2:30

Montreal-based Canadian progressive gem...side 1 includes only one long(19'54")track entitled "Mann Made" , which is very interesting, mixing progressive, classical and elctronic music with spooky and dreamy organ passages, acidy guitarleads, flute solos, harsh vocals...side 2 except "Keep On Moving" ,which utilises fast rhythms with horns and synthesizers contains more slow and melodic moments like "Country Company" and "Reflections" with a hypnotic mood... "Carnival" is a strong mid-tempo ballad, sounding like a combination of Tim Buckley and Tim Hardin, but with also harsh vocals...the cut called "Evolution" ,which is the album's highlight, features good rhythm and stunning lead guitar work with several similarities to Pink Floyd's music...

Machine - Machine 1970 ( Netherlands,Psychedelic Rock)

The group from Rotterdam Machine - a group of Swinging Soul Machine minus singer Iwan "Spooky" Groeneveld, who has created the duet Spooky & Sue (along with Sue Chaloner) ... But there are three new members - vocalist John Caljouw (ex-Dragonfly), trumpeter François Content (ex-Big Ballad Boogie Blues Beat Bouncers Band, Free, Jimmy Walker, Outward Bound and other) and saxophonist Maarten Beckers (ex-Free), which, in fact, have made this group of "psychedelic". Do not look at the abundance of wind - here were the main guitar and organ. After releasing singles and an album, the band broke up ... In 1972, François Content went to the Windmill Orchestra , Hans Sel - in the Heart , Paul Vink - at Twelve O'Clock , Jan Bliek - in a Limousine , Jan Warby and Wim Warby - in Tantalus . In 1973, the group seemed to be gathered again under the name of Francois Content and Wim Warby , but finally disbanded in 1974. Very interesting album, not looking at the cover ...

Banzai - Hora Nata

Banzai - Formed in 1971 to Antwerp, the Belgian group Banzai as quintet stabilizes him around 1972, quickly earning a good reputation in the different festivals of the epoch, also in Holland, where in fact the label Delta puts them under contract. In 1974 they go out both the single one "born Hora / Good Morning Life" that the only album entitled note "Hora Nata born" (). The music of the Banzais has an evident prog-symphonic matrix, with debts toward the capiscuolas of the kind, but also with some memory of the softer Canterbury Sound. Apart the brief one and sparkle episode of opening "You always like an entrée?", where to the sax is also listened, it is above all the long suite "Obelisk" to denote the taste extremely moved and variegated of the band, among dynamics rhythmic fractures, almost in style fusion and beautiful variations on the theme submitted to the keyboards of Peter Torfs and the soloist guitar of John Mc Or, instrumentalist eclectic protagonist of a big end. In "Hattrick" the atmosphere for instance postpones to Dutch formations of the epoch as the Kayaks, with the guitar that vivaciously punctuates the liquid tonalities of the synth and a rhythmic section that it favors then you sprout him some organ. A passage as "Try" it recalls the lesson of the Yes instead, kind in the sung parts, and in the sumptuous arrangement, dense of swerves and numbers to effect of the soloists. On the same slope it stirs the long suite "Three magicians", mail in queue and even more grandiloquent: the dreamy voices, the preziosismis classicheggianti of the tastierista and the long alone chitarristicis summarize the essence of the prog-rock more sophisticated than the period. The band finally loosens him in 1976, after having engraved other two individuals in lighter key. CD Pseudonym.
