The Divine Baze Orchestra - Dead But Dreaming...

(NEW! Swe. 2010)
The Divine Baze Orchestra

"An established name in the Scandinavian progressive scene, The Divine Baze Orchestra has been working on their sound for almost eight years. Their debut "Once We Were Born" recieved good reviews all over the continent, and now the quintet announce the release of their anticipated sophomore album, entitled "Dead but Dreaming". The lead singer and guitarist Oliver Eek describes the new album as a tribute to H.P Lovecraft, the late legendary fantasy writer. "The lyrics", Oliver continues, "are heavily inspired by Lovecraft's work, especially the "Cthulu"-suite, and deals with themes such as cosmic horror and forces that stand above the power of humanity." The five members' great musical talent is apparent, with complex arrangements that never limit themselves to genre, but at the same time accurately follows the lyrical twists and turns. "Dead But Dreaming" sounds like no other album in the genre, and marks a big step in the development of progressive and art rock music. A must-have for fans of H.P LOVECRAFT, KING CRIMSON and URIAH HEAP.

Speed, Glue & Shinki

It was written about this album so much. There is a brief story. Speed, Glue & Shinki band was formed in late 1970.
Members of the band were Shinki Chen (ex-guitarist of Powerhouse and Food Brain), Masayoshi Kabe (ex-bassist of The Golden Cups) and Joe 'Pepe' Smith, the Phillipine nationality (ex-drummer of Downbeats and Zero History). And above them all stood Ikuzo Orita, earlier producer of Polydor and now of Atlantic. Orita believed that with Atlantic help Speed, Glue & Shinki will be famous in the world, as Atlantic managed Led Zeppelin and Cactus.
As about album, as for me, I'll describe it like alcoholic psychedelic rock, or simply acid-rock. You can only read/listen to lyrics in the songs and you'll understand all :) I think there's no need to describe each song. This on is NEED TO BE LISTENED TO!!!
In Japrocksampler's Top-50 this album is on the highest place alongside with legendary "Satori" of Flower Travellin' Band.

Captain Marryat is a Scottish band, and have been playing together for just a year.
They used to play in pubs and clubs. I can say that it is a progressive rock band with psych
flourishes – doom-laden organ plus acid guitar riffs and strong male vocals.
The 250 copies pressed were sold at gigs, and two that surfaced on eBay in late 2008 went for
around £3000 each.

Mahogany Rush "Maxoom" 1973

1. Maxoom
2. Buddy
3. Magic Man
4. Funky Woman
5. Madness
6. All in Your Mind
7. Blues
8. Boardwalk Lady
9. Back on Home
10. New Beginning

The first album released from Frank Marino. This album was dedicated to Jimi Hendrix which enhanced the ugly rumor that Frank was Jimi's reincarnation. The record features a vast array of styles which only grace the surface of what's to come.
My favorite song is "Buddy" in which Frank is actually singing to Jimi about the affect that he had on Frank and his untimely death.

- Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush -

One day when I'm old and grey and feeble, I'm gonna open one of those cheap roadside attraction museums, and mine is going to be dedicated to the urban legends and tall tales of rock 'n' roll. Somewhere amongst exhibits like The Ham Sandwich That Killed Mama Cass, Morrison's "Little Jim" Live in Miami and The Rod Stewart Stomach Pump will be a mural depicting Frank Marino in a drug-induced coma being taught guitar by the ghost of Jimi Hendrix. To put it another way, this well-worn version of Marino's story is complete balderdash, but it's too imbedded into the rock 'n' roll consciousness to ever really go away.
But even the hard facts are pretty amazing: Canadian drug enthusiast Frank Marino taught himself how to play guitar while in the hospital (but not in a coma) recovering from a bad trip and went on to record the first Mahogany Rush album at the tender age of 16! Marino managed to make a long career out of his Hendrix obsessions, but I give the nod to the debut simply because later offerings were produced far too slickly.

Norman Haines Band (UK Heavy Progressive)

1971 classic Birmingham UK heavy prog album from Norman Haines Band (post Locomotive and formerly Sacrifice). The sound is much like Locomotive with perhaps the odd slice of Arzachel style jamming. Featuring Neil Clark on guitar, Andy Hughes on bass & vocals, Jimmy Skidmore on drums and Mr Haines himself on keyboards & vocals. A single was taken from the album (Finding My Way Home/Rabbits) and released under the name Avalanche! Great cover art and a superb version of the Locomotive track "Mr. Armageddon". .
Following the huge success of our recent reissue of prog rockers Locomotive's album, We Are Everything You See (RRLP042), it seemed only right that we should release the other album featuring the group's amazing key board player, Norman Haines.
Originally released in 1971 on the Parlophone label (PCS 7130), The Norman Haines Band's Den Of Iniquity carries on where We Are Everything You See left off, which is hardly surprising, as many believe that this album was actually recorded at the same time. Here again the genius of Haines stands out, but the entire record can be considered one of the finest and least-known prog albums ever to see the light of day.
At its time of release, many shops refused to stock Den Of Iniquity, sighting the album's grotesque cover as just too disgusting for the sensitive record-buying public to cope with. What a mistake. Not only did lovers of prog miss out on a truly great album but also its absence from record shop shelves turned it into one of the most sought-after collector’s items of all time, with originals now fetching more than £1000!
Den Of Iniquity boasts many musical highlights, but its finest moments were two instrumentals, Rabbits and Haines' Life Is So Unkind. Unfortunately, after the release of one final solo 45, Give It To You Girl, Haines called it a day and disappeared into obscurity, leaving behind not just the thought that a potentially-great and influential musician had retired far too early, but that the legacy of his brief career was one of the most collectable prog albums ever.

Side 1:

01 - Den Of Iniquity
02 - Finding My Way Home
03 - Everythibg You See (Mr Armagedon)
04 - When I Come Down
05 - Bourgeois (2:59)
06 - Rabbits
a) Sonata (For Singing Pig)
b) Joint Effort
c) Skidpatch
d) Miracle
07 - Life Is So Unkind

b) Echoes Of The Future
08 - Elaine (Bonus)
09 - I really Need a Friend (Bonus)
10 - Daffodil (Bonus)
11 - Autumn Mobile (Bonus)
12 - Give To You Girl (Bonus)

SCORPION

Scorpion (Tower Records ST-5171 - 1969)
Bob Babbitt: Bass
Mike Cambell: Vocals
Ray Monette: Guitars
Andrew Smith: Drums
Recorded at Tera-Shirma Studio, Detroit

Psychiadelic soul and funk rock, also exploring the blues and progressive rock fields .
Vocalist Mike Campbell (aka Michael Champion of "Total Recall" and "Beverly Hills Cop" fame) proofed that he was a talented and enthusiastic
shouter. The musicians are, of course, a strong outfit. Bob Babbitt worked as a Funk Brother for the famous Motown Studio and backed tons of hits with his sure shot bass lines.
Ray Monette is a member of Rare Earth and the Funk Brothers and shows all his skills from Funk to Blues with heavy wahwah lines on this recording!
